What happens when there’s finally a break in the rain, but court 18 at
Newman is flooded and unplayable? Fortunately Sunday it was Ted Preston –
husband and spectator - to the rescue!
Now don’t get me wrong, there have been plenty of non-players in this
tournament out there roll-drying courts this weekend – Ted included. But
Ted went and found the Newman groundskeeper and asked for a shovel. A
shovel? Yep – that’s right. Ted is in construction and realized
immediately that the drainage system for court 18 was all plugged up. He
took that shovel and quite literally dug right in! Thanks to Ted, and a new
ditch behind court 18, things drained right along and play was once again
underway.
And you know what – his wife Cindy’s 3.0 Shellnut team from Columbus wasn’t
even playing on court 18!

Ted Preston is himself a tennis player. In fact his CORTA team
qualified to be here at this State Championships. His team couldn’t
all make the trip but, fortunately for us, he came along to support
Cindy’s team.
Ted says his handiwork is really no big deal (though I beg to
differ) and said, “I’m just a tennis player who couldn’t play tennis
today and I’m happy to help out.” |
