Slice Girls
By Robin Dawson
When the Arias 3.5 West
Georgia team first got together they decided to pick teammates with
personalities that would allow them to serve up some fun. Team member Beth
Hunt said, “It didn't hurt that our teammates are all ‘Purrfect,’ so in
picking our team, we came up with a process called CATS -- Cooperative
Analytical Team System.”
Next, such a well put
together team obviously needed a fabulous name. Seven members of this
14-girl team attended a “team meeting,” and after a cocktail or three,
decided on names for each and every one of their players. Names were given
and not taken back.
Here’s the line-up for
West Georgia’s own Slice Girls: Bossy Slice, Slammin' Slice, Suga Slice,
Barbie Slice, Wicked Slice, Major Slice – yes, she is a Major in the
military, Sporty Slice, Flighty Slice, Everything Nice Slice, Booty Slice,
Party Slice, Power Slice, Fire n Ice Slice, and Scarlett Slice.
Beth Hunt’s husband Jeff
serves in the Navy Reserve and was recently deployed to Afghanistan. Hunt
said, “He is now referred to as ‘Navy Slice’ and is cheering us on while
serving and protecting our country.”
This is the Slice Girls’
second year at the State League Championships. Unfortunately the first year
consisted of numerous trips to visit their captain, Teri Arias, who was
hospitalized here in Augusta the night before the tournament began with an
intestinal virus. “She was awesome from the hospital,” said Hunt, as Arias
made the line-ups right there in the hospital room.
There haven’t been any
trips to the hospital this year, but team member Alison Martin, aka Booty
Slice, was a victim of the recent “Mother’s Day Tornado” that hit the
Atlanta-metro area. Her house was destroyed and she’s been living out of a
suitcase ever since. Why did she make time to be here at the State
Championships when she’s got so much to deal with at home? Martin says it’s
“because I want to play tennis and I need a reality break!” She says she’s
learned that “you don’t know how easy you’ve got it until something like
this happens.”
This “reality break” comes
as a welcome trip for all of the Slice Girls. “Everyone had better watch
out,” they warn. “We’re looking to ‘slice up’ our competition!”
