Rudolph Calms . . . and Inspires

Paula Sumple’s Harrison TC (Marietta) 3.5 team has a mascot that calms . . . and inspires—Rudolph. Here, attached to Paula’s bag at her Sunday morning Tattnall TC match, Rudolph is a reminder not to take tennis too seriously. Of course, in the name slot of the bag it reads: “Get to the Net! Angles!”

The relaxed team, front from left is Sharon Young, Tippy Guerin, Liz McMahon and Bonnie Miller; Back is Nicola Burningham, Kristin McReynolds, Lori Ethridge, Jennifer Christian, Tamara Watkins and Paula Sumple.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer as a team mascot and inspiration makes more sense in the context of the Atlanta winter league season, but the team’s sticking with what got them to Macon—Rudolph.

In the midst of a tense match in early season winter play (pre-Christmas), Captain Paula Sumple (Harrison TC, Marietta, 3.5) started singing “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer” to herself to remind her that, after all, this is just tennis. She and partner Nicola Burningham won their match and the red-nosed fella’ stuck.

It’s not all easy-going because on Paula’s tennis bag hangs a “Beanie Baby”-like Rudolph and the reminder to: “Get to the Net! Angles!” All the team bags have a Rudolph to remind them, as Paula says, that they’re in tennis, for the team togetherness, spirit and fun.

Some other team member comments include:

“Rudolph reminds me to stay in my happy place.” --Liz McMahon

“Rudolph has helped me stay focused, but also reminded me to have fun and not be so serious and over think my shots.” –Kristin McReynolds

“Rudolph makes me laugh, which makes me more relaxed to play. Get your Rudolph on!” –Lori Ethridge

And finally, “Rudolph Rocks!” --Anonymous
