Savannah’s 3.5 team “Suds & Buds” are a group of guys who know how to have fun. For 18 years they’ve been playing tennis together at Bacon Park TC. The team was started by two guys, Tom Vaughn (current captain) and Tommy Long (former teammate). Tommy had just gotten divorced and he and Tom decided they’d rather spend their Monday nights playing tennis than be couch potatoes watching Monday Night Football.

After about five years playing every Monday night, it occurred to them that they should play league tennis and play some different opponents. They have an official timekeeper, Barry Hill, who is apparently the only teammate who wears a watch, and their very own brewmaster, Chris Stoval. It’s a team with many talents.

Thinking ahead, they brought their own keg to the championship, an English Summer Ale, brewed by Chris Stoval. Chris is not just a brewmaster, but also a homebrew judge studying for his BJCP (Beer Judging Certification Program). It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it . . .

The BJCP publishes the guidelines for homebrew styles of beer, which include some 80 different styles, like the English Summer Ale, Belgian Wit (white), American Pale Ale, Hefeweizen (German wheat) and Bock, to name just a few of his favorites among the many different styles of beer.

When asked how much beer he brews each year, Chris says he brews 50 gallons . . . Georgia state law limits the amount of homebrew that may be made by one head of household to that amount. Most other states allow up to 100 gallons to be homebrewed each year.

Good thing there’s no limit to the amount of tennis these guys play, because they play a lot. Not a couch potato among ‘em.
