When in Rome….
by Paige Miller
May 8th, a date that has been on city championship team captains’
calendars for quite a while, has finally arrived. To officially begin the
proceedings, the captains’ meeting was held at the Rome Civic Center at
7:00pm. Bill Thornton, President of the Coosa Valley Tennis Association &
Tournament Director, Richard Garland, Executive Director of the Rome-Floyd
Parks & Recreation Authority, and Kathy Mathis of the Rome Convention and
Visitors Bureau all welcomed the captains to this year’s 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0
USTA Georgia Adult State League Championships. Dave Bain, USTA Georgia’s
Director of Leagues, thanked the captains/volunteers for all of their hard
work and dedication as well as went over the teams’ schedules. Referee,
Jimmy Helton, had the dubious task of going over the rules and answering
questions from many of the first time attendees.
Team captains were provided gift bags, won raffle prizes and were entered to
win a trip to the Colony Beach and Tennis Resort in Longboat Key, FL. A
great time was had by all!!
Seven sites throughout Rome will be used throughout the weekend to
accommodate the 90 teams with over 1,000 players. The first ball was hit at
8:00am this morning with scheduled play throughout the day with the last
match starting at 5:00.
The 2008 USTA League Tennis Adult State Championships have
officially begun!!
